Joy (2024)
Joy is a short video that captures the artist’s partner dancing in their kitchen, a regular occurrence within their household. Within this video, the artist explores themes such as the making of a home, the dynamics of shared spaces and intimacy. The method of recording and the quick pace aims to highlight the authenticity of human behaviour as well as how these everyday, joyous moments are often overlooked.
Sister (2022)
The video presents a delicate interplay of emotional disconnect and reconnection. It captures the artist and her sister dancing in an empty field, moving between moments of togetherness and separation. The dance between being a companion and an individual highlights the tension of bonding with another as well as the sense of distance that can accompany our close relationships.
The video also evokes the shared memory of childhood, a time where the presence of a sibling offers joy, reassurance and a sense of belonging. Through playfulness, the two sisters portray a sense of freedom and innocence which we are often longing for in adult life.
Rock Cakes (2021)
Rock Cakes presents an intergenerational exchange of a family recipe through spoken word and video. The work firstly depicts a gestural performance of the artist following her Grandma’s instructions. The family recipe in this work is interpreted as a conduit for connecting to what is passed down or shared.
Jessica then recites the memory of visiting her Grandma’s house. The interplay between the two parts proposes new ways of how we connect with those closest to us and to feelings of sentiment.
